ElevenLabs how to get agent ID: open the ElevenLabs dashboard, go to Agents, open your agent, and copy the agent ID from the agent’s settings or overview page — it also appears in the agent’s URL. The ID is what connects your agent to the website widget, the SDKs, the API and phone integrations. Checked 6 Nov 2026.
Best for: developers and owners who need to connect an agent to a website, an app, or a phone number.
Not for: anyone who only uses the agent in the dashboard test chat — you never need the ID there.
Starting price: Free $0 (10,000 credits per month, 15 agent minutes) (checked 6 Nov 2026). Starter $6 per month (30,000 credits per month, 75 agent minutes) (checked 6 Nov 2026). The $1 Starter first-month offer is shown until Nov 8 when checked on 6 Nov 2026.
What is an ElevenLabs agent ID?
An agent ID is the unique identifier for one agent in ElevenLabs Conversational AI (ElevenAgents). Every agent you create gets one. The API, the SDKs and the website widget use it to work out which agent a call, a message or an embed belongs to, so the right voice, prompt and knowledge base answer.
Think of the ID as an address, not a password. It is meant to be public: it sits in the widget embed code on your website, so anyone can see it in the page source. What must stay secret is your API key, which authorizes API calls and can spend your credits. Keep the key on your server and never put it in public HTML or JavaScript.
Editing an agent does not create a new one. Change the first message, the system prompt, the voice or the knowledge base and the agent keeps the same ID, so the widget, SDK or phone integration you already connected keeps working. Only deleting the agent and creating a new one gives you a new ID.
How to get your ElevenLabs agent ID
There are three ways to find the ID. The dashboard copy is the fastest for one agent; the API list is the best way when you manage several agents or need the ID inside a script. All three cost nothing — finding an ID uses no credits and no agent minutes.
Method 1: Copy it from the dashboard
1. Sign in to the ElevenLabs dashboard.
2. Open Agents (Conversational AI) from the sidebar.
3. Click the agent you want to connect.
4. Find the agent ID on the agent’s settings or overview page and click the copy icon next to it.
5. Paste the ID where your widget, SDK or integration asks for it. Cost: 0 credits, 0 agent minutes.
If you cannot see the ID on the settings page, look at the address bar: the ID also appears in the agent’s URL when the agent is open. Copy the part of the URL that identifies the agent, not the whole dashboard address.
Method 2: Pin the agent and copy it from the details
Pin your agent in the workspace, then open the agent details. The agent ID is shown there with a copy icon next to it. This is the same ID as in Method 1 — it is just a second place to find it. Pinning is useful when you switch between several agents and want your main agent at the top of the list. Cost: 0 credits, 0 agent minutes.
Method 3: List agents with the API
Send a GET request to /v1/convai/agents with your API key in the Authorization header. The response lists every agent in your workspace with its agent_id and name, so you can pick the right one without opening the dashboard. This is the way to use when you manage many agents, when you build an automation that needs the ID, or when you want to check that an agent exists before you connect it. Cost: 0 credits to list agents. You need an API key, which you can create in your ElevenLabs account settings. Our guide to use the ElevenLabs API shows how to set up the key and send your first request.
If you have not created an agent yet, there is no ID to find. Build one first with our ElevenLabs voice agent tutorial, which walks through the six-step build: name and template, first message and system prompt, knowledge base, voice, test call, and call history. The ID appears as soon as the agent exists.
Where to use the agent ID
Once you have the ID, it goes where the connection is made. Here are the four places it is used most.
Website widget
Add the widget embed to your site: the <elevenlabs-convai agent-id=”your-agent-id”> element, plus the widget script from unpkg (@elevenlabs/convai-widget-embed). Replace “your-agent-id” with the ID you copied. Visitors then see a floating widget that talks to your agent. This is the most common use of the agent ID, and it needs no API key in the page.
JavaScript and Python SDKs
The ElevenLabs SDKs take the agent ID when you start a conversation. Pass the ID to the conversation starter and the SDK connects to that agent. You still need your API key on the server side for the signed URL flow; the ID alone tells the SDK which agent to talk to.
API calls
API endpoints for a single agent use the ID in the path, for example GET /v1/convai/agents/{agent_id} to read an agent’s settings, or the conversation endpoints to start a session. The ID in the path plus your API key in the Authorization header is the pattern for every agent-specific call.
Phone integrations
Phone integrations link a number to an agent by its ID. With ElevenLabs Twilio, the Twilio number routes calls to the agent you pick; the same pattern applies to WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams, where the agent ID connects the channel to the right agent. You do the linking once in the integration settings, then every call on that number reaches the same agent.
Agent ID vs API key
The agent ID and the API key are easy to confuse because both are long strings of letters and numbers, but they do different jobs. The agent ID says which agent. The API key says who is calling. The ID goes in public places such as widget embed code; the key must never appear in public HTML or JavaScript. If you paste the wrong one into the wrong place, the connection fails: a key where an ID belongs is not a valid agent, and an ID where a key belongs is not valid authorization.
If an API key leaks, rotate it in your account settings and update your server. If an agent ID is shared, nothing breaks: it is meant to be public, and it alone cannot authorize API calls. The one thing to watch is that if someone copies the ID, they could embed the same agent on another page, and those conversations would use your agent minutes.
How much does using an agent cost?
Finding the agent ID is free, but using the agent is not. Every plan gives you a monthly allowance of agent minutes — the minutes callers spend talking to your agent. Our guide to ElevenLabs Conversational AI pricing has the full breakdown; the allowances are:
| Plan | Price (checked 6 Nov 2026) | Credits per month | Agent minutes per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10,000 | 15 |
| Starter | $6 per month | 30,000 | 75 |
| Creator | $22 per month | 121,000 | 275 |
| Pro | $99 per month | 600,000 | 1,238 |
The $1 Starter first-month offer is shown until Nov 8 when checked on 6 Nov 2026. Fifteen agent minutes on the Free plan is enough to test the widget and take a few calls; a live agent on a busy site will need Starter or Creator. Watch the minutes, not just the credits: a long phone call can use up the monthly allowance even when you have credits left.
Pros
• Free to find — copying the ID costs no credits and no agent minutes.
• One ID works everywhere: the website widget, the SDKs, the API and phone integrations.
• The ID stays the same when you edit the agent, so connected widgets keep working.
• The API list method finds the ID for many agents at once, without opening the dashboard.
• Every plan gets an agent ID, including Free.
Cons
• The dashboard hides the ID in settings, so first-time users often cannot find it.
• The ID looks like the API key, and pasting the wrong one breaks the connection.
• One wrong character in a pasted ID silently fails — the widget shows nothing useful about what went wrong.
• Deleting the agent kills the ID, so every integration that used it stops working.
• The Free plan gives only 15 agent minutes a month, so a live agent runs out fast.
Who should NOT use it
If you only test your agent in the dashboard, you do not need the agent ID at all — the test chat works without it. If you have no website, app or phone number to connect, the ID has nowhere to go. And if you want a phone agent without writing code, use the guided Twilio integration flow rather than the raw ID and API calls.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the agent ID in ElevenLabs?
Open the ElevenLabs dashboard, go to Agents, and open your agent. The agent ID is shown on the agent’s settings or overview page, with a copy icon next to it. It also appears in the agent’s URL when the agent is open. Copy it from there and paste it into your widget, SDK or integration.
Is the agent ID the same as the API key?
No. The agent ID identifies which agent a call or embed belongs to; the API key proves who is calling the API. The ID goes in public embed code, while the key must stay on your server and never appear in public HTML or JavaScript. Pasting one where the other belongs breaks the connection.
Can I use one agent ID on two websites?
Yes. The same agent ID works in the widget on any number of sites, and each site shows the same agent with the same voice, prompt and knowledge base. Every conversation on every site uses the same plan’s agent minutes, so a busy second site will use up your monthly allowance faster.
What if I can’t see the agent ID?
Open the agent first — the ID is on the agent’s settings or overview page, not on the agents list. Check that you are in the right workspace, and look at the URL when the agent is open. If the agent was deleted, its ID is gone, and you need to create a new agent to get a new one.
Does the agent ID change if I edit the agent?
No. Editing the first message, system prompt, voice or knowledge base keeps the same agent and the same ID, so widgets and integrations you already connected keep working. Only deleting the agent and creating a new one gives you a new ID, and every integration that used the old one stops working.
Do I need a paid plan to get an agent ID?
No. Every agent gets an ID on the Free plan too, and the Free plan gives 15 agent minutes a month (checked 6 Nov 2026). Paid plans give more minutes: Starter $6 per month gives 75, Creator $22 per month gives 275, and Pro $99 per month gives 1,238 (checked 6 Nov 2026). You only pay when you need more minutes.
