To delete a voice in ElevenLabs, open My Voices, find the voice, click the three-dot More actions menu, and select Delete voice. Confirm the deletion. The voice is gone for good — deleting cannot be undone — and its slot frees up at once. Checked 5 Nov 2026.
Best for: Anyone at their voice-slot limit, or cleaning up old clones and test voices you no longer use.
Not for: Anyone who wants to keep the voice for later — deletion is permanent, and a library voice that has been removed from the Voice Library cannot be saved again.
Starting price: Free $0 (checked 5 Nov 2026) — 10,000 credits a month and 3 voice slots. See the full plan comparison for Free, Starter, Creator, and Pro.
How to delete a voice from My Voices
Deleting a voice takes four steps and costs nothing. No credits are used, because My Voices is an account page, not a generation. Before you start, be sure you want the voice gone: deleting cannot be undone, and you will be asked to confirm before it happens.
Step 1: Log in and open My Voices
Log in at elevenlabs.io and open My Voices from the left sidebar. This is your list of voices: the ones you made, the ones you cloned, and the ones you saved from the library. Cost: $0, no credits used.
Step 2: Find the voice
Find the voice in the list. The list shows each voice’s name, and you can search by name if you have many. Check the name twice — two voices can share a name, and the one you delete is gone for good. Cost: $0.
Step 3: Click More actions (three dots)
Click the three-dot More actions button on the voice’s row. A menu opens with Copy voice ID, Add to collection, Edit voice, View history, and Delete voice. Cost: $0.
Step 4: Select Delete voice and confirm
Select Delete voice, then confirm when asked. The voice leaves My Voices at once, and its slot frees up. There is no undo button and no trash folder for voices, so only confirm when you are sure. Cost: $0.
Which voices cannot be deleted?
Not every voice in My Voices can be removed. Three cases block the delete option, and each has its own fix.
• Default and Legacy voices cannot be deleted. These are the built-in voices that ship with the account. The good news is that they do not take up your custom voice slots, so there is no reason to remove them.
• Voices you shared with the Voice Library must be unshared first. If you have shared a voice with the library, stop sharing it before you try to delete it. The delete option stays out of reach until the sharing is off.
• An unverified Professional Voice Clone can be deleted 24 hours after your most recent verification attempt. If the 24 hours have not passed, the delete option is not yet open to you.
Voices you saved from the Voice Library do not take up your custom voice slots either. That matters when you run out of room: the voices that count against your limit are your own custom voices — clones, generated voices, and professional clones. If a voice you saved was later removed from the Voice Library, you will not be able to save it to My Voices again in the future, so think twice before deleting a saved library voice you like.
Voice slots: why deleting frees a slot
Each plan carries a set number of custom voice slots, and deleting a custom voice frees one of them. The official Help Center lists the slots per tier, and a monthly voice operations quota that covers adding and editing voices.
| Plan | Price | Voice slots | Voice operations a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 (checked 5 Nov 2026) | 3 | 55 |
| Starter | $6/mo (checked 5 Nov 2026) | 10 | 65 |
| Creator | $22/mo (checked 5 Nov 2026) | 30 | 95 |
| Pro | $99/mo (checked 5 Nov 2026) | 160 | 290 |
Scale and Business carry 660 voice slots each, with 1,040 voice operations a month. If you need more voice slots than your tier allows, the Help Center says you would need to upgrade your account. Deleting voices is the free alternative: it frees slots without a plan change, and it costs no credits. The credits guide explains how credits are spent on each generation.
How to delete a voice with the API
Developers can delete a voice without opening the website. The Delete voice endpoint is DELETE https://api.elevenlabs.io/v1/voices/{voice_id}. Replace {voice_id} with the ID of the voice, and send the request with your API key in the xi-api-key header. A successful call returns {“status”: “ok”}.
To find the ID, copy it from My Voices with the three-dot menu, as the Voice ID guide explains, or list your voices with GET /v2/voices. The same limits apply as on the website: default and legacy voices cannot be deleted, and a shared voice must be unshared first. The API does not add a second confirmation step, so check the ID before you send the call.
What happens after you delete a voice?
The voice leaves My Voices at once, and its slot frees up for a new voice. The deletion is permanent: there is no undo, no trash folder, and no way to restore the voice from ElevenLabs. If the voice was one you saved from the Voice Library, and it has since been removed from the library, you cannot save it to My Voices again. Not stated on the official page as of 5 Nov 2026: whether audio already generated with the voice stays playable after the voice is deleted.
What to do if Delete voice is missing
First, check the voice type. If it is a Default or Legacy voice, the delete option is not there by design — those voices cannot be deleted, and they do not use a custom slot. Second, check sharing: a voice shared with the Voice Library must be unshared before it can be deleted. Third, for an unverified Professional Voice Clone, wait 24 hours after your most recent verification attempt, then try again. Fourth, check where you are: the delete option lives in My Voices, not in the public Voice Library list, so open My Voices from the left sidebar and use the three-dot menu there.
Pros
• Deleting a voice takes three clicks and costs nothing.
• The slot frees up at once, so you can add a new voice without upgrading.
• A confirmation step stops an accidental click from deleting a voice.
• The same delete works by API, with a {“status”: “ok”} reply to confirm it.
• Default, Legacy, and saved library voices do not use custom slots, so they never block you.
Cons
• Deleting cannot be undone — there is no trash folder and no restore.
• Default and Legacy voices cannot be deleted at all.
• A shared voice must be unshared first, which adds a step.
• An unverified Professional Voice Clone can only be deleted 24 hours after your most recent verification attempt.
• A saved library voice that was later removed from the library cannot be saved to My Voices again.
Who should NOT use it
This guide does not help if you want to keep a voice for later — deleting is permanent, so archive the voice another way instead, such as saving its settings or keeping a sample of its audio. It also does not help if the voice you want gone is a Default or Legacy voice: those cannot be deleted, and they do not use a slot, so leave them alone. And if your real problem is running out of credits, deleting voices will not help — credits and voice slots are separate limits, and the credits guide covers the credit side.
Frequently asked questions
How do I delete a voice in ElevenLabs?
Open My Voices, find the voice, click the three-dot More actions menu, and select Delete voice. Confirm when asked. The voice leaves My Voices at once and its slot frees up. Deleting cannot be undone, so check the name before you confirm.
Can I delete a voice and get it back?
No. Deleting a voice cannot be undone, and there is no trash folder or restore. If the voice was a clone, you can clone it again from the same recordings, but the original voice entry is gone. If it was a saved library voice that has since been removed from the library, you cannot save it to My Voices again.
Why can I not delete a voice?
Three reasons cover most cases. Default and Legacy voices cannot be deleted. A voice shared with the Voice Library must be unshared first. An unverified Professional Voice Clone can only be deleted 24 hours after your most recent verification attempt. Check the voice type and sharing first.
Does deleting a voice free a voice slot?
Yes, if the voice used a custom slot. Deleting a custom voice frees one slot at once: Free has 3 slots, Starter 10, Creator 30, and Pro 160. Default, Legacy, and saved library voices do not use custom slots, so deleting them frees nothing.
Can I delete a voice with the API?
Yes. Send DELETE https://api.elevenlabs.io/v1/voices/{voice_id} with the voice ID in the address and your API key in the xi-api-key header. A successful call returns {“status”: “ok”}. The same limits apply: default and legacy voices cannot be deleted, and a shared voice must be unshared first.
Does deleting a voice refund credits?
No. Deleting a voice frees a voice slot, not credits. Credits and voice slots are separate limits: credits pay for the speech you generate, and slots cap how many custom voices you can keep. Deleting voices will not add credits to your account.
