ElevenLabs credits are the single currency behind every ElevenLabs product: text-to-speech, dubbing, music, sound effects, and the API all draw from one monthly pool. One text character costs 1 credit on standard models, so the Free plan’s 10,000 credits equal roughly 10 minutes of audio. Credits reset each billing cycle. Prices and rules below were checked 5 Nov 2026.

Best for: creators, podcasters, video makers, and developers who want one shared credit pool for text-to-speech, dubbing, music, and sound effects instead of separate subscriptions.

Not for: anyone expecting unlimited generation, a per-word plan with no monthly cap, or commercial rights on the free tier.

Starting price: Free at $0/mo with 10,000 credits per month (checked 5 Nov 2026); paid plans start at $6/mo (checked 5 Nov 2026).

ElevenLabs credits explained: how the system works

Every ElevenLabs product draws from a single monthly credit pool. Text-to-speech, speech-to-text, voice changer, voice isolator, dubbing, music, sound effects, and the API all spend the same credits, so one subscription covers your whole audio workflow. You never buy separate allowances for separate tools.

For text-to-speech, the rule is simple: one text character costs one credit on standard models such as Multilingual v2. Spaces and punctuation count as characters. On the faster Flash and Turbo models, API usage costs between half a credit and one credit per character, which stretches your pool further for high-volume or real-time work.

ElevenLabs translates credits into listening time on its pricing page: the Free plan’s 10,000 credits cover about 10 minutes of generated audio, Starter’s 30,000 credits about 30 minutes, Creator’s 121,000 credits about 121 minutes, and Pro’s 600,000 credits about 600 minutes. Extra minutes beyond your plan cost roughly $0.36 on Free, $0.20 on Starter, $0.18 on Creator, and $0.17 on Pro (checked 5 Nov 2026).

What each ElevenLabs product costs in credits

Because every product shares one pool, it helps to know the exchange rates before you build a workflow that mixes narration, cleanup, music, and dubbing. These are the official per-product costs from the ElevenLabs pricing page (checked 5 Nov 2026):

ProductCredit cost
Text to Speech1 credit per character (standard models); 0.5–1 credit per character on Flash/Turbo via API
Speech to Text330 credits per minute of audio
Eleven Music900 credits per minute of music
Sound Effects200 credits per generation
Voice Changer1,000 credits per minute
Voice Isolator1,000 credits per minute
Dubbing, automatic, with watermark2,000 credits per minute
Dubbing, automatic, without watermark3,000 credits per minute
Dubbing Studio, with watermark5,000 credits per minute
Dubbing Studio, without watermark10,000 credits per minute

A practical example: a 10-minute podcast episode with an AI voiceover costs about 10,000 credits for the narration on a standard model. Add AI-generated intro music for one minute (900 credits) and clean up a noisy interview segment with Voice Isolator for five minutes (5,000 credits), and the full episode lands near 16,000 credits — more than the Free plan holds, but about half of a Starter plan.

Credit limits by plan

Your monthly credit pool grows with your plan. Here is the full lineup from the official ElevenLabs pricing page, with the listening-time estimates ElevenLabs publishes for text-to-speech (checked 5 Nov 2026). Two details matter here. First, the $1 first-month Starter offer was showing a countdown ending around Nov 8 when we checked on 5 Nov 2026, so confirm the current offer at checkout. Second, paid plans from Starter upward include a commercial license for generated audio, while the Free plan is personal use only — a key reason to upgrade if your credits power client work. Prices exclude taxes.

When credits reset and whether they roll over

Your credit allowance resets at the start of each billing cycle — the anniversary of the day you subscribed, not the first of the month. If you subscribed on the 14th, your new credits land on the 14th of each cycle. The Free plan also refreshes monthly on the same basis.

Unused credits can roll over, with limits. On active paid subscriptions, unused credits carry forward for up to two months, and your balance can reach at most three times your monthly quota — this month’s allotment plus up to two months of saved credits. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits at the end of the cycle, and rollover does not apply to the Free plan. Pay-as-you-go top-up credits are separate and are not subject to the rollover cap. For the full reset timing details, see our guide to when ElevenLabs credits reset.

There is also a per-generation ceiling: ElevenLabs caps the number of credits you can spend in a single request, with different limits for the Free tier and paid subscriptions. Very long texts must be split into smaller generations, which is worth knowing before you paste a full audiobook chapter into the box.

How to check your balance and get more credits

Running out mid-project is annoying, but checking and topping up takes less than a minute:

  1. Log in at elevenlabs.io, open your profile menu, and choose the subscription page to see your remaining credits. (0 credits to check)
  2. Compare your remaining balance against your next project’s cost — for example, a 5,000-character script needs about 5,000 credits on a standard TTS model. (0 credits to plan)
  3. If the math does not fit, upgrade to a larger plan for a bigger monthly pool, or buy pay-as-you-go top-up credits that sit outside the rollover cap. (0 credits to check; top-ups cost money)
  4. Generate carefully: credits are charged per generation request, not per download, so re-downloading the same file is free. If a generation disappoints you, limited free regenerations may be available as long as the content and key settings are unchanged — the app tells you before generating whether a retry is free. (0 credits when a retry is free, otherwise the full generation cost)

The Free plan is the cheapest way to learn the system: 10,000 monthly credits let you test voices, settings, and short scripts before spending anything. Our ElevenLabs free plan guide walks through its limits.

Pros

  • One shared pool across TTS, dubbing, music, sound effects, and the API — no juggling separate allowances.
  • Generous rollover: unused paid-plan credits last up to two months, to 3× your monthly quota.
  • Transparent per-product rates published on the official pricing page.
  • Free regenerations are sometimes available when a generation misses the mark.

Cons

  • No unlimited option at any tier — heavy users must step up to Scale, Business, or top-ups.
  • The Free plan has no rollover and no commercial license.
  • Cancelling or downgrading forfeits unused credits at the end of the cycle.
  • Per-generation credit caps force very long texts into multiple requests.

Who should NOT buy into the ElevenLabs credit system

Skip the paid credit pools if you need truly unlimited synthesis — ElevenLabs caps every plan, and the per-minute overage adds up fast at high volumes. It is also a poor fit if you only generate a few minutes a month and never touch dubbing, music, or the API; the Free plan’s 10,000 monthly credits already cover that. Finally, if you need commercial rights, do not build client work on Free credits — upgrade to Starter or higher for the commercial license.

Frequently asked questions

How many credits does one minute of ElevenLabs audio cost?

About 1,000 credits for text-to-speech on a standard model, since one character costs one credit and a minute of speech is roughly 800–1,000 characters. Other products differ: speech-to-text costs 330 credits per minute, Eleven Music 900 credits per minute, and voice changer or isolator 1,000 credits per minute. Dubbing ranges from 2,000 to 10,000 credits per minute depending on settings. (checked 5 Nov 2026)

Do unused ElevenLabs credits roll over?

Yes, on paid plans. Unused credits roll over for up to two months, and your balance can reach at most three times your monthly quota while your subscription stays active. Rollover does not apply to the Free plan, and downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits at the end of the billing cycle. Top-up credits follow separate rules. (checked 5 Nov 2026)

When do my ElevenLabs credits reset?

At the start of each billing cycle, which begins on the anniversary of your signup date. If you subscribed on the 20th, fresh credits arrive on the 20th of each cycle. The monthly reset applies to Free and paid plans alike; only the rollover rules differ between them. (checked 5 Nov 2026)

Can I buy extra credits without upgrading my plan?

Yes. ElevenLabs sells pay-as-you-go top-up credits separately from subscriptions, and these are not subject to the rollover cap. Top-ups suit months with an unusually large project, while a plan upgrade suits a permanently higher workload. Check the pricing page for current top-up rates. (checked 5 Nov 2026)

Do API calls use the same credits as the website?

Yes. The API draws from the same monthly pool as the web app, so a character generated through the API costs the same as one generated in the dashboard. The one difference is pricing efficiency: Flash and Turbo models cost 0.5–1 credit per character via the API, making them cheaper for high-volume use. (checked 5 Nov 2026)

Is there a limit on credits per single generation?

Yes. ElevenLabs caps how many credits a single generation request can use, with different ceilings for the Free tier and paid plans. In practice this means very long scripts must be split into smaller chunks before generating. If you regularly produce long-form audio, a higher plan raises the ceiling. (checked 5 Nov 2026)

What happens to my credits if I cancel my subscription?

Unused credits are forfeited at the end of the billing cycle when you cancel or downgrade. You keep access until the cycle ends, but nothing carries into a free or inactive account. Export any audio you need before the cycle closes, since regeneration after cancellation would require a new subscription. (checked 5 Nov 2026)
