ElevenLabs credits reset at the start of each billing cycle, which begins on the day you subscribed. Unused credits roll over for up to two months — up to 2× your monthly quota, for a maximum balance of 3× — on active paid plans. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits at the end of the cycle. Checked 4 Nov 2026.

Best for: Subscribers who want to bank unused credits across months — paid plans roll over up to 2× the monthly quota into the next cycle.

Not for: Free-plan users expecting rollover — unused free credits expire at each reset, and banking only works on active paid plans.

Starting price: $6/month (Starter, 30,000 credits, up to 60,000 rollover); the reset date is the day you signed up. Rules checked 4 Nov 2026.

When do ElevenLabs credits reset?

Your credit allowance resets at the start of each billing cycle, and the cycle begins on the day you subscribed — not on the first of the month. Subscribe on the 14th and your credits refill on the 14th of every month. When the subscription renews, you receive a new monthly allotment of credits on top of whatever rolled over.

To find your date, check your ElevenLabs account billing section — the renewal date shown there is your reset date. The Free plan resets on its own monthly cycle too, but with one critical difference covered below: free credits never roll over.

A concrete example: subscribe on 14 Nov 2026 and the first cycle runs 14 Nov to 13 Dec, with credits refilling on 14 Dec. Short months do not change the pattern — the renewal date in your account billing section is the source of truth, not the calendar. The Free plan’s monthly cycle works the same way, minus rollover.

Do unused credits roll over?

Yes — on paid plans. Unused credits roll over for up to two months, up to 2× your monthly quota, so your balance can reach at most 3× your monthly quota: this month’s allotment plus up to two months of rollover. The conditions are strict: you must maintain an active paid subscription and must not downgrade or cancel.

Two carve-outs. Rollover does not apply to the Free plan — its 10,000 credits expire at each reset, use them or lose them. And pay-as-you-go top-up credits are separate: they are not subject to the rollover cap, so they sit outside the 3× balance limit.

In practice, rollover rewards steady subscribers and punishes churn. Stay subscribed and a quiet month banks credits for a busy one; cancel for a month and the banked balance is gone.

Worked example: a Starter subscriber uses 10,000 of 30,000 credits in month one. Month two opens with 30,000 fresh plus 20,000 rolled over, for 50,000. Use 10,000 again and month three opens with 70,000. The bank keeps growing until it hits the 90,000 cap (3× quota), then stops — idle months beyond that add nothing.

What is the maximum credit balance on each plan?

Monthly quota, maximum rollover (2× quota), and maximum balance (3× quota) per plan, from the official pricing FAQ:

PlanMonthly priceMonthly quotaMax rollover (2× quota)Max balance (3× quota)
Free$010,0000 (no rollover)10,000
Starter$630,00060,00090,000
Creator$22121,000242,000363,000
Pro$99600,0001,200,0001,800,000
Scale$2991,800,0003,600,0005,400,000
Business$9906,000,00012,000,00018,000,000

The 3× cap is the number to plan around. A Creator subscriber who uses nothing for two months enters month three with 363,000 credits — enough for a 6-hour audiobook in one burst. But a fourth idle month adds nothing: the cap, not the calendar, is the limit.

What happens to credits when you upgrade, downgrade, or cancel?

The three plan changes behave very differently. In order of friendliness:

  1. Upgrade — 0 credits lost. If you upgrade to a higher plan, any unused credits from your previous plan roll over into the next billing cycle. A Creator-to-Pro upgrade mid-audiobook is the standard rescue move: the leftover balance joins Pro’s 600,000 instead of expiring.
  2. Downgrade — credits expire at cycle end. If you downgrade, your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing cycle, then drops to the lower plan. Downgrading forfeits unused credits at the end of the cycle — the rollover bank does not survive the move down.
  3. Cancel — credits expire at cycle end. If you cancel, the subscription remains active until the end of the current billing cycle. After that, the account drops to the Free plan and any unused paid credits expire. Our guide to cancelling ElevenLabs walks through the steps and timing.

The pattern is simple: moving up preserves credits, moving down or out destroys them. Time downgrades and cancellations for right after a billing date only if you have already spent the balance — otherwise you are donating credits back.

Credit reset rules: pros and cons

Pros

  • Two months of rollover up to 2× quota is generous — a quiet month genuinely banks credits for a busy one.
  • The 3× balance cap is published and countable, so the maximum hoard is plannable per plan.
  • Upgrades preserve unused credits, so scaling up mid-project never wastes the old balance.
  • Pay-as-you-go top-ups sit outside the rollover cap — extra purchased credits are never capped by the 3× limit.
  • Cancelled plans stay active until cycle end — you keep full access through the last paid day.

Cons

  • No rollover on the Free plan — 10,000 monthly credits are strictly use-or-lose.
  • Downgrading or cancelling forfeits the entire rollover bank at the end of the cycle — months of saved credits vanish.
  • The 3× cap punishes long idle stretches: a fourth quiet month banks nothing.
  • The reset date is your signup day, not the calendar month — easy to misjudge if you assumed the 1st.
  • Top-up credits being outside the cap is useful but confusing — two balances with two different rule sets.

Who should NOT count on rollover

Do not build a plan around rollover if you churn subscriptions — cancelling even for a month wipes the bank, so the strategy only works for continuous subscribers. Do not count on it on the Free plan either: 10,000 credits a month with no rollover means sporadic free users lose everything each cycle. And if you are considering a downgrade to save money, spend the balance first — the forfeiture at cycle end is automatic. Our ElevenLabs free plan guide details exactly what the free tier does and does not keep.

Frequently asked questions

When exactly do my credits reset?

At the start of each billing cycle, which begins on the day you subscribed — not the first of the month. Subscribe on the 14th and credits refill on the 14th monthly, with a fresh allotment added to whatever rolled over. Check your account billing section for the exact renewal date.

Do unused ElevenLabs credits roll over to next month?

Yes, on paid plans: unused credits roll over for up to two months, up to 2× your monthly quota, for a maximum balance of 3× quota. You must keep an active paid subscription and not downgrade or cancel. Rollover does not apply to the Free plan, and pay-as-you-go top-ups follow separate rules.

What happens to my credits if I cancel?

Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing cycle — you keep full access through the last paid day. After that, the account drops to the Free plan and any unused paid credits expire. To keep credits, spend the balance before the cycle ends or stay subscribed.

What happens to credits if I upgrade mid-cycle?

Nothing is lost: unused credits from your previous plan roll over into the next billing cycle when you upgrade. That makes a mid-project upgrade — say Creator to Pro during an audiobook — the clean way to get more quota without abandoning the old balance.

Do pay-as-you-go top-up credits expire?

Top-up credits are separate from the subscription quota and are not subject to the rollover cap — they sit outside the 3× balance limit. The pricing FAQ does not publish a separate expiry for top-ups, so treat the subscription rules above as the documented behavior and confirm current top-up terms at checkout.

Why did my balance drop after downgrading?

Because downgrading forfeits unused credits at the end of the cycle. Your old plan stays active until the billing date, then the account moves to the lower tier and the rollover bank is wiped. The forfeiture is automatic — spend the balance before the cycle ends if you plan to downgrade.

Does the free plan’s 10,000 credits roll over?

No. Rollover does not apply to the Free plan — its 10,000 monthly credits expire at each reset. The free tier is strictly use-or-lose, which is one more reason productions that span months belong on a paid plan.
