ElevenLabs API pricing is 1 credit per character for text to speech, so 1,000 characters cost 1,000 credits — about $0.20 on Starter ($6/30,000) and $0.17 on Pro ($99/600,000). Flash v2.5 halves the per-character cost. The cheapest start is the $1 Starter first month (shown until Nov 8). Checked 1 Nov 2026.

Best for: Developers budgeting API voice generation by the character, from prototypes to production workloads.

Not for: Dashboard-only users — API and dashboard share the same credit rates, so there is nothing to save by switching.

Starting price: $0 for API testing on the free plan; $6/month Starter for paid API use (1 Nov 2026).

How ElevenLabs API pricing works: credits per character

There is no separate API price list. Credits are the unit of consumption shared across every ElevenLabs product, per the official documentation, so an API call and a dashboard click spend from the same balance at the same rates. Text to speech costs 1 credit per character — the docs state this directly — which makes API pricing a pure function of plan price divided by credits.

That simplicity is the whole story for standard models: take your plan’s monthly price, divide by its credits, and you have your per-character cost. The only wrinkle is model choice, covered below, and the pay-as-you-go top-up for usage beyond the subscription. If you have not created a key yet, our guide to getting an ElevenLabs API key walks through the 5 official steps.

Cost per 1,000 characters on every plan

The maths is division. $6 ÷ 30,000 × 1,000 = $0.20 on Starter; $22 ÷ 121,000 × 1,000 ≈ $0.1818 on Creator; $99 ÷ 600,000 × 1,000 = $0.165 on Pro. Per-unit cost falls as plans grow, then plateaus around $0.165–$0.17 from Pro upward — the bigger plans buy volume, seats, and features, not cheaper characters.

Per-model pricing: v4, Turbo, and Flash v2.5

The docs list three text-to-speech model families with different trade-offs. Eleven v4 covers 90+ languages with a 10,000-character limit per request. Eleven v4 Turbo targets latency-sensitive use at around 100ms. Eleven Flash v2.5 is the price play: the docs state it carries 50% lower price per character for API generations, with 32 languages and a 40,000-character limit.

In practice, Flash v2.5 halves every number in the table above: $0.20 per 1,000 characters on Starter becomes about $0.10; Pro’s $0.165 becomes about $0.08. For bulk narration, IVR prompts, or anything generating millions of characters, model choice moves the bill more than plan choice does.

Cheapest plan for API use

It depends on volume. Testing and prototypes: the free plan’s 10,000 credits cost $0 (non-commercial, 2 concurrent requests). Cheapest paid start: the $1 Starter first month — 30,000 credits at about $0.033 per 1,000 characters with the commercial license included, shown until Nov 8 when checked 1 Nov 2026. Light ongoing use: Starter at $6 ($0.20 per 1,000). Serious volume: Pro at $99, where the per-unit rate bottoms out near $0.165 — and pair it with Flash v2.5 to halve that again. Track the current offers on our ElevenLabs discount page.

One caution on “cheapest”: the per-unit rate stops falling after Pro, so Scale ($299) and Business ($990) are only cheaper if you actually need their 1.8M and 6M credit allowances, seats, or 192 kbps audio. Buying Scale for 200,000 characters a month wastes most of the allowance. For the full tier comparison, see our ElevenLabs pricing breakdown.

Worked example: budgeting 1 million characters a month

Take a concrete workload: an app generating 1,000,000 characters a month — about 1,000 minutes of speech, or roughly 16 hours of audio. On standard models at 1 credit per character, that is 1,000,000 credits. Which plan fits? Starter’s 30,000 credits cover 3% of it — nowhere near enough. Creator’s 121,000 covers 12%. Pro’s 600,000 covers 60%, leaving 400,000 characters to top-up credit. Scale’s 1,800,000 covers the whole workload with 800,000 credits to spare, at $299 a month — an effective $0.166 per 1,000 characters, or about $166 for the million.

Now run the same million on Flash v2.5 at half price per character: it costs the equivalent of 500,000 standard credits. Suddenly Pro’s 600,000 credits cover the entire workload at $99 — an effective $0.099 per 1,000 characters, or $99 for the million. That is the single biggest lever in ElevenLabs API pricing: model choice before plan choice. The same million on the $1 Starter first month would cost $1 for the first 30,000 characters, then need a real plan behind it for the rest.

Pay-as-you-go top-up for overflow

The pricing page FAQ describes pay-as-you-go as a prepaid balance that is drawn down after subscription credits are used. It is the overflow valve: when a traffic spike burns through the monthly allowance, top-up credit keeps the API answering instead of failing. Top-up credit is accounted separately from subscription credit in the FAQ, so it does not disturb the rollover math on the subscription balance.

ElevenLabs API pricing: pros and cons

Pros

  • One simple rate: 1 credit per character, shared across the API and dashboard.
  • No API surcharge on standard models — the key pays dashboard rates.
  • Flash v2.5 halves the per-character API cost, per the official docs.
  • Per-unit cost falls to about $0.165 per 1,000 characters on Pro and above.

Cons

  • No free commercial API use — free-plan credits are non-commercial however they are spent.
  • Per-unit pricing plateaus at Pro; Scale and Business do not buy cheaper characters.
  • Heavy API use burns the monthly cap fast; top-up credit is the only overflow.
  • Model character limits (10,000 per request on v4) force chunking for long texts.
  • Only 2 concurrent requests on Free, which throttles busy integrations.

Who should NOT build on the ElevenLabs API

Anyone whose volume fits in a dashboard session — the API adds code, key management, and billing surface for no benefit. Builders who need guaranteed per-request latency should measure Turbo’s ~100ms figure against their own stack before committing, since real-world latency includes network and integration overhead. And cost-sensitive bulk users should weigh Flash v2.5’s halved rate against the quality bar their listeners actually need — the cheapest character is only cheap if the audio is good enough. Our ElevenLabs free plan guide covers the $0 testing route.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the ElevenLabs API cost per character?

1 credit per character for text to speech — the rate the docs publish. In dollars, that is about $0.20 per 1,000 characters on Starter ($6 for 30,000 credits), about $0.18 on Creator ($22 for 121,000), and about $0.165–$0.17 on Pro and above. Eleven Flash v2.5 halves the per-character price for API generations.

What is the cheapest ElevenLabs plan for API use?

For testing, the free plan: $0 for 10,000 credits (non-commercial). For paid use, the $1 Starter first month is the cheapest entry — 30,000 credits at about $0.033 per 1,000 characters with the commercial license, shown until Nov 8 when checked 1 Nov 2026. Ongoing, Starter at $6 suits light use; Pro at $99 gives the lowest standard per-unit rate.

Does the API cost more than the dashboard?

No. Credits are shared across every product, so an API character and a dashboard character cost the same 1 credit. The only API-specific discount is Eleven Flash v2.5’s 50% lower per-character price — the dashboard has no equivalent published saving.

How do I estimate my monthly API bill?

Multiply your characters by your plan’s per-1,000 rate. Example: 500,000 characters a month on Pro = 500 × $0.165 = $82.50, inside the $99 plan’s 600,000 credits. On Flash v2.5, halve it: about $41. Add pay-as-you-go top-up for months when you exceed the allowance.

What is pay-as-you-go top-up credit?

A prepaid balance the pricing page FAQ describes as drawn down after subscription credits are used. It keeps the API answering when a spike exceeds the monthly allowance, and it is accounted separately from subscription credit — so it does not disturb the rollover math on the subscription balance.

Is there a free tier for the ElevenLabs API?

Yes — the free plan’s 10,000 monthly credits work through the API at $0, since the docs put no tier gate on key creation. The limits: non-commercial use only, 2 concurrent requests, no rollover, and the 10,000 credits cover about 10 minutes of speech.
