What is ElevenLabs Dubbing V2?
ElevenLabs Dubbing V2 is the next-generation dubbing engine, currently in Alpha, that converts video or audio from one language into 90+ other languages while preserving the original voices, timing, and background audio. It replaces the original Dubbing Studio (V1) workflow with a rebuilt pipeline focused on voice fidelity and control.
The headline addition is the cloning-strength setting, which defaults to 7 on a slider. This control decides how aggressively the dub clones the original speaker’s voice versus producing a cleaner, more generic delivery in the target language. Higher values keep the speaker’s identity; lower values prioritize clarity and naturalness in the new language.
V2 handles the full dubbing pipeline automatically: it transcribes the source, translates the script, generates the dubbed voices, aligns them to the original timing, and mixes the result with the background audio. You can dub into multiple target languages from a single upload, and the engine supports up to 32 unique speakers in one file, keeping each voice distinct.
One important note: the original Dubbing Studio is now in maintenance mode. ElevenLabs is directing new development to V2, so if you are starting a dubbing project today, V2 is the forward-looking choice — with the caveat that Alpha software can change. Our Dubbing Studio guide covers the V1 workflow for reference.
How to use Dubbing V2 in 5 steps
Step 1: Open the Dubbing page and choose V2. Sign in to ElevenLabs, go to Dubbing, and start a new project. Select the V2 engine (Alpha) rather than the legacy V1 flow. The interface asks for your source file first. Cost: 0 credits to set up the project.
Step 2: Upload your video or audio. In the app, uploads are capped at 1 GB or 180 minutes; via the API, a single file can be up to 3 GB. Supported inputs include MP4, MP3, WAV, and other common containers. Longer files are processed as one dubbing job. Cost: 0 credits to upload — billing starts when dubbing runs.
Step 3: Set source and target languages. Confirm the source language (or let the engine detect it) and pick one or more of the 90+ target languages. If your file has multiple speakers, set the expected number of speakers up to 32 so the engine separates voices correctly. Cost: 0 credits to configure.
Step 4: Adjust cloning strength and audio options. The cloning-strength slider defaults to 7. Raise it to keep the original voice identity; lower it for a cleaner target-language delivery. Choose whether to preserve the background audio track or drop it, and note that V2 currently has no watermark toggle — free-tier dubs are watermarked. Cost: 0 credits to configure.
Step 5: Run the dub and download. Start the dubbing job. Self-serve plans allow 3 concurrent dubbings, so you can queue multiple languages at once. When processing finishes, preview the 1080p output in the app, then download the dubbed video or the separate audio and subtitle tracks. Cost: billed per dubbing job from your credit balance — rates follow the standard dubbing pricing on the official pricing page (checked 5 Nov 2026).
Dubbing V2 vs V1: what changed
V2 is a rebuilt engine, not a reskin. The biggest functional change is the cloning-strength control, which V1 never offered — V1 applied a fixed voice-matching approach. V2 also streamlines the workflow: where V1 centered on the Dubbing Studio editor with manual transcript correction, V2 emphasizes automatic end-to-end dubbing with fewer manual steps.
| Dubbing V2 (Alpha) | Dubbing V1 (Studio) | |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | New Alpha pipeline | Original pipeline |
| Cloning strength control | Yes (default 7) | No |
| Languages | 90+ | 29–32 |
| Max speakers per file | 32 | Lower / varies |
| Watermark toggle | No (free tier watermarked) | Configurable |
| Editor | Simplified flow | Full Dubbing Studio editor |
| Status | Alpha — active development | Maintenance mode |
| Output preview | 1080p | 1080p |
The trade-off: V1’s Dubbing Studio gave you a full editor for correcting transcripts and regenerating individual segments, which power users liked. V2 trades some of that manual control for speed and voice quality. If you need segment-level editing today, V1 remains available in maintenance mode; for new projects, V2 is where ElevenLabs is investing.
Limits and requirements
Dubbing V2 caps app uploads at 1 GB or 180 minutes per file; the API accepts up to 3 GB per file. Self-serve plans can run 3 concurrent dubbings, so batching multiple languages means queueing rather than parallel runs beyond three. The engine supports up to 32 unique speakers per file — beyond that, voices may merge.
Because V2 is in Alpha, expect changes: features, limits, and pricing mechanics can shift before general availability. Free-tier dubs carry a watermark, and V2 currently offers no toggle to remove it — paid plans are the path to clean output. Always check the official dubbing docs for the latest Alpha constraints before planning a large project.
| Limit | Value (checked 5 Nov 2026) |
|---|---|
| Engine status | Alpha |
| App upload cap | 1 GB / 180 minutes |
| API file cap | 3 GB per file |
| Target languages | 90+ |
| Max speakers per file | 32 |
| Concurrent dubbings (self-serve) | 3 |
| Output preview | 1080p |
| Free-tier watermark | Yes (no toggle in V2) |
Real-world use cases
YouTube creators use V2 to publish the same video in five or ten languages without re-recording, keeping their on-camera voice recognizable in each market. Course creators dub entire lesson libraries so one recording serves global students. Marketing teams localize ad creatives while preserving the original actor’s delivery, and the cloning-strength slider lets them decide how much of the original performance to keep.
Podcasters dub episodes for international feeds, and media companies process interview archives with many speakers — the 32-speaker ceiling covers panel discussions and roundtables. Because V2 preserves background audio, music and ambient sound survive the dub instead of being stripped out.
Pros
- Cloning-strength slider (default 7) gives real control over voice fidelity vs. clarity.
- 90+ target languages from a single upload, with multi-language output in one job.
- Up to 32 unique speakers per file, with voices kept distinct.
- Preserves original voices, timing, and background audio automatically.
- Simplified end-to-end flow — less manual transcript work than V1 Studio.
Cons
- Still in Alpha — features, limits, and behavior can change without notice.
- No watermark toggle in V2; free-tier dubs are watermarked.
- Less manual segment-level editing than the V1 Dubbing Studio editor.
- Only 3 concurrent dubbings on self-serve plans, which slows large batch jobs.
- App uploads capped at 1 GB / 180 minutes per file.
Who should NOT use it
Skip Dubbing V2 if you depend on the V1 Studio’s segment-level transcript editing — that editor is the maintenance-mode V1. Skip it if you need guaranteed-stable behavior, because Alpha software can change. Skip it if you need more than 3 concurrent dubs or files over the upload caps. And if you only dub occasionally and want the cheapest path, compare V2 credit costs against V1 before committing.
Frequently asked questions
What is ElevenLabs Dubbing V2?
It is the new Alpha dubbing engine that converts video or audio into 90+ languages while preserving voices, timing, and background audio. It adds a cloning-strength control (default 7) and a simplified automatic workflow, replacing the original Dubbing Studio (V1), which is now in maintenance mode. Checked 5 Nov 2026.
What does the cloning-strength setting do?
Cloning strength controls how closely the dubbed voice matches the original speaker. Higher values preserve the speaker’s identity; lower values produce a cleaner, more natural delivery in the target language. The default is 7, and you can adjust it per project to balance fidelity against clarity.
How many languages and speakers does Dubbing V2 support?
Dubbing V2 supports 90+ target languages from a single upload and up to 32 unique speakers per file, keeping each voice distinct. You can dub into multiple languages in one job, which suits creators localizing content for several markets at once.
What are the upload limits for Dubbing V2?
In the app, uploads are capped at 1 GB or 180 minutes per file. Through the API, a single file can be up to 3 GB. Self-serve plans allow 3 concurrent dubbings. Output previews render at 1080p before you download the final files.
Is Dubbing V1 (Dubbing Studio) still available?
Yes, but it is in maintenance mode — ElevenLabs is directing new development to V2. V1’s Dubbing Studio editor still offers segment-level transcript correction that V2’s simplified flow does not. New projects should start on V2 unless you specifically need V1’s manual editing.
How much does Dubbing V2 cost?
Dubbing jobs are billed from your ElevenLabs credit balance. The Free plan includes 10,000 credits per month (checked 5 Nov 2026), Starter is $6/mo with 30,000 credits (checked 5 Nov 2026), and Creator is $22/mo with 121,000 credits (checked 5 Nov 2026).
